JOANNE DUGAN
Joanne Dugan is a New York City-based American photographer and visual artist who explores the intersections between analog photography, painting, sculpture and mindfulness. Her work focuses on photography as a physical, three-dimensional medium and on mindful looking as a dynamic, expansive act that connects people through shared viewing experiences.
Dugan’s abstract, one-of-a-kind images, collages and sculptures are rendered from Cyanotype, Silver Gelatin and other traditional light-sensitive photographic printing materials and are deeply informed by her ongoing mindfulness meditation practices. Her most recent work transforms unique handmade abstract photographs into three-dimensional, moving sculptures, using various raw materials including vintage glass, milled metal, resin, nylon and wire.
Dugan was recently awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in Photography, a highly selective award granted in the United States by the Guggenheim Foundation. Her work was purchased by J. Paul Getty Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) for their permanent collections and is also part of many private collections both domestically and internationally. She has exhibited throughout the United States and in the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands and Japan.
Publications include The New York Times T Magazine, the Harvard Review, Unseen and Photograph magazines, among others. She was recently an artist-in-residence at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA), the Peaked Hill Trust and the Abbott-Watts Residency for Photography and was a finalist for the Meijberg Art Prize at Unseen Amsterdam.
Dugan’s writing and images are published in seven books and are in the permanent library collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the New York Public Library and the George Eastman House. She has taught and lectured at many US-based academic institutions including the International Center of Photography (ICP) and Columbia University in New York City.
