VITTORIA GERARDI

Vittoria Gerardi was born in 1996 in San Donà di Piave, Italy. She lives and works between Padua and Paris. She studied photography at the International Center of Photography in New York and fine arts at London Metropolitan University.

Her practice explores the thresholds between visibility and invisibility, focusing on the conditions through which photographic images come into being. She works with the concept of latency as a transitional state in which the image exists before it is revealed, and uses this idea to examine trace, time, memory, and material.

Her approach combines traditional photography with material-based processes. She experiments in the darkroom by altering standard development techniques and incorporates materials such as wax, plaster, clay, glass, and bronze, using methods like lost-wax casting, glass fusion, and enamel work. Through these transformations, she seeks to reveal the intimate connection between photographic structure, technical process, and memory.

Her first series, Confine, was created in Death Valley in the United States. In it, fragments of the desert are isolated in compositions where light and time are held in by symbolic lines and forms. Her work on Pompeii extends this investigation. Some images are veiled in plaster while others are immersed in sculptural blocks, allowing only partial details to emerge. In Latenza, she deepens her inquiry into photography as both material and language, and into its relationship with nature and light.

Her work has been shown in several exhibitions across Europe. In 2021, the Marta Herford Museum in Germany presented a selection of works from her first two series. Her pieces are held in numerous public and private collections.
