Catherine Millet attempts to unravel the mysterious interweaving of chance, confused desires, and more or less well understood opportunities that lead a young girl with no baggage, no money, and little culture to leave her suburb for the Saint-Germain-des-Prés of artists and art galleries. The intimate life and the professional life inevitably mix.

The time is May 68 in Paris and the emergence of the SoHo district in New York, the appearance of an art that doesn't look like art, the birth of what we call today "contemporary art".

Beginnings is the story of a sentimental education that is also a sexual education and an intellectual training.

Elle ne sait pas encore qu’ils préparent une revue de poésie mais, bientôt, elle attachera ses pas aux leurs. Premières lectures, premières amours, découverte de l’émotion esthétique, premiersécrits.
Catherine Millet tente de détisser le mystérieux entrecroisement de hasards, de désirs confus, d’opportunités plus ou moins bien comprises qui conduisent une jeune fille sans bagage, sans argent et sans grande culture à quitter sa banlieue pour le Saint-Germain-des-Prés des artistes et des galeries d’art. La vie intime et la vie professionnelle inéluctablement se mêlent.
L’époque, c’est Mai 68 à Paris et l’émergence du quartier de SoHo à New York, l’apparition d’un art qui ne ressemble pas à l’art, la naissance de ce qu’on appelle aujourd’hui « l’art contemporain ».

Commencements est le récit d’une éducation sentimentale qui est aussi une éducation sexuelle et une formation intellectuelle.
