La question de la matière traverse l'histoire de la photographie. Elle a trait tout à la fois au sujet photographié, à l'image qui en découle et à son devenir. Elle englobe les processus de création, les procédés, l'esthétique, la réflexion sur la forme, et jusqu'à la dématérialisation.

Putting matter to the test of photography and photography to the test of matter: this is the purpose of the BNF exhibition, from which this book has selected 40 photographs, followed by 4 essays from which a new matter emerges: that of reflection.

How do photographers represent natural or artificial materials? How do they interrogate matter, using their own technical and plastic means? Why do they hybridize photography with the graphic arts or video? What happens to matter when the photographic medium is replaced by projection, when the flow of images made available on the Internet takes over?
