“Mictlán” by Joan Fontcuberta

Dans son exploration de la photographie en relation avec les valeurs de vérité et de mémoire, Joan Fontcuberta a développé ces dernières années le projet Trauma, un voyage poétique et conceptuel qui plonge dans les archives photographiques historiques. Fontcuberta s'intéresse aux images dans un état traumatique, aux images malades dues à la détérioration causée par l'humidité, la moisissure ou les micro-organismes. Des images qui sont dans le dernier souffle de la représentation, réduites à des traces fantomatiques dans lesquelles la mémoire s'estompe : son lien avec la réalité est rompu, l'information visuelle est perdue et son statut de document s'évanouit.

En 2019, Fontcuberta s'est rendu dans une sélection d'archives mexicaines et a réalisé plus d'un millier de clichés à partir de négatifs sur verre branlants. Dans cette belle, tragique et sombre suite mexicaine, des lueurs de l'histoire du pays apparaissent encore : la Révolution, les étapes dramatiques, les personnages publics, la vie sociale et familiale.... L'ensemble de ces registres graphiques va des portraits de Francisco Villa et Emiliano Zapata et des exécutions aux mariages et baptêmes et aux photos d'identité, du folklore et des traditions au paysage et au patrimoine monumental. Il nous confronte ainsi à une mosaïque de situations et de genres, de l'album de famille au photojournalisme, de la photographie scientifique à la photographie pornographique, qui rend compte de la texture des récits sociaux et historiques, mais qui, d'autre part, permet d'extrapoler métaphoriquement la cosmologie ancestrale de Mictlán. À travers neuf cahiers, sont évoquées les neuf étapes du monde souterrain que le défunt devait franchir pour réussir chacune des épreuves spécifiques et continuer à avancer jusqu'à atteindre le repos éternel. Dans ce parcours, le corps s'étoffe jusqu'à la libération complète de l'âme, dans un processus qui suggère la dématérialisation progressive de la photographie elle-même.

"Mictlán est un bijou expérimental qui se cristallise dans un livre d'artiste original, imprimé en édition signée et limitée à 100 exemplaires. Il est présenté dans un étui en amate et le corps est constitué de neuf feuilles, chacune avec un type de papier mexicain différent : kraft, mantequilla, révolution, éducation, bond, estraza, mina gris, entre autres. En outre, le livre photo comprend l'essai MICTLÁN A Photographic Hauntology écrit spécialement pour le livre par l'auteur. Mictlán est un livre de photos publié par HYDRA, fruit d'une collaboration entre Joan Fontcuberta, Ramon Pez et Ana Casas Broda, avec le soutien précieux de l'imprimeur Emiliano Aivar et de l'équipe d'Hydra.

In his exploration of photography in connection with values ​​of truth and memory, in recent years Joan Fontcuberta has been developing the Trauma project, a poetic and conceptual journey diving into historical photographic archives. In them Fontcuberta is interested in those images in a traumatic state, sick images due to deterioration caused by moisture, mold or microorganisms. Images that are in the last breath of the representation, reduced to ghostly traces in which the memory fades: broken its link with reality, the visual information is lost and its status as a document vanishes.

In 2019 Fontcuberta went to a selection of Mexican archives and made more than a thousand shots from rickety glass negatives. In this beautiful, tragic and somber Mexican suite, gleams of the country's history still appear: the Revolution, dramatic milestones, public figures, social and family life ... The set of these graphic registers covers from portraits of Francisco Villa and Emiliano Zapata and executions to weddings and baptisms and identity photos, from folklore and traditions to the landscape and monumental heritage. Thus, it confronts us with a mosaic of situations and genres, from the family album to photojournalism, from scientific to pornographic photography, which accounts for the texture of social and historical narratives, but which, on the other hand, allows metaphorically extrapolating the ancestral Mictlán cosmology. Through nine notebooks, the nine stages of the underworld that the deceased had to go through in order to pass each of the specific tests and continue advancing until reaching eternal rest are evoked. In this journey, the body fleshes out until the soul is completely liberated, in a process that suggests the progressive dematerialization of the photograph itself.

"Mictlán" is an experimental jewel that crystallizes in an original artist's book, printed in a signed edition and limited to 100 copies. It is presented in an amate case and the body consists of nine sheets, each with a different type of Mexican papers: kraft, mantequilla, revolution, education, bond, estraza, mina gris, among others.
