Michael Wesely, “Time works”

"While the technical progress of photography has consisted for almost two centuries in reducing the exposure time, the German photographer Michael Wesely (born in 1963) tries on the contrary to lengthen it as much as possible: the duration of his photographs (the time the camera lens is open) is equal to the duration of the event photographed, whether it is a football match, the life of a bouquet of flowers before they fade, or the construction of buildings in Berlin (two years and two months). The resulting images condense time", says Marc Lenot.

“Alors que le progrès technique de la photographie a consisté en près de deux siècles à réduire le temps de pose, le photographe allemand Michael Wesely (né en 1963) tente au contraire de l’allonger au maximum : la durée de ses photographies (le temps d’ouverture de l’objectif de son appareil) est égale à la durée de l’événement photographié, que ce soit un match de foot, la vie d’un bouquet de fleurs avant qu’elles ne se fanent, ou la construction d’immeubles à Berlin (deux ans et deux mois). Les images ainsi obtenues condensent le temps”, dixit Marc Lenot.
